Vitamin D: Why the Supplement Isn't Enough Without These Two Cofactors

I take Vitamin D. Most people I know take Vitamin D. And yet when I started looking into why so many people supplement faithfully and still test low โ€” I found something nobody had mentioned to me.

The supplement isn't the problem. It's what Vitamin D needs to actually work.

What Vitamin D actually does

Vitamin D behaves less like a vitamin and more like a hormone. It regulates over 200 genes and shows up in immune function, bone density, mood regulation, muscle function, inflammation, and insulin sensitivity. It's also one of the most common deficiencies in the world โ€” and one of the most commonly supplemented incorrectly.

The two things most people are missing

Magnesium

Magnesium is required to convert Vitamin D into its active form. Without enough magnesium, supplemental Vitamin D can sit in storage โ€” the number on your lab test goes up, but what your cells can actually access may not change.

Estimates suggest 50โ€“80% of Americans don't get enough magnesium through diet. Most people taking Vitamin D are also low in magnesium without knowing it.

Vitamin K2

When Vitamin D increases calcium absorption, that calcium needs to go somewhere useful โ€” ideally into bones and teeth. K2 is the traffic director. It activates proteins that move calcium into bone and keep it out of soft tissue like arteries. Worth discussing with your doctor if you're supplementing at higher doses.

The difference between 25 and 60 is something most people can feel. Getting from deficient to the low end of normal isn't the same as getting to optimal.

What about sun exposure?

Your skin produces Vitamin D naturally from UVB sunlight โ€” and the body regulates how much it makes, which is why toxicity from sun exposure is essentially impossible. Supplementation bypasses that regulation, which is why monitoring levels matters when supplementing at higher doses.

The practical reality: meaningful UVB exposure requires midday sun, significant skin surface, and no sunscreen. Most of us aren't getting that consistently.
